چکیده

We present an analysis of delay encountered in successfully accessing the Random Access Channel (RACH) of Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) Radio Interface by User Equipments (UE) that want to initiate data transfer. The process of random channel access is described and the MS state modeled as a DTMC in order to derive the delay. We evaluate the variation of the channel access delay with the preamble power, preamble detection threshold, maximum attempts, inter-attempt time interval, number of mobile users, number of slots, persistence level, rate of incoming data and rate of retransmissions. We also derive the capture probability of preambles sent in the same slot by multiple UEs in the presence of Rayleigh fading. 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Performance Evaluation of Umts Packet Services

The provision of efficient high speed packet data services is probably the most important challenge for third generation systems (3G). The efficiency of such services mainly depends on the radio interface. The UMTS W-CDMA radio interface is characterized by great flexibility and a variety of different physical and logical channel types: for example, on the downlink, the Dedicated Channels (DCH)...

Delay in UMTS Radio Access Networks: Analytical Study and Validation

This paper deals with the delay analysis of the traffic within the UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN). Delay is a very important Quality of Service aspect in the UTRAN. Especially, the delay over the Iub link is the major limited factor for the dimensioning of the UTRAN. Based on the system analysis, a queuing model is proposed in this paper to derive the delay time over the Iub inte...

On the Applicability of “pgmcc” to UMTS Multicast

In this paper, we investigate the applicability of the Pragmatic General Multicast Congestion Control (pgmcc) scheme to the multicast data delivery over Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) networks. We show that the pgmcc scheme cannot support the degradation of the radio channels in the UMTS Terrestrial Radio-Access Network (UTRAN). Our major contribution is that the legacy schem...

S-UMTS access network for broadcast and multicast service delivery: the SATIN approach

This paper proposes a complete satellite access network solution for multimedia broadcast multicast service (MBMS) delivery based on the T-UMTS standards. Firstly, the benefits of MBMS delivery via satellite (SAT-MBMS) for both S/T-UMTS network operators are shown via market and business analysis. A new integrated S/T-UMTS architecture for MBMS delivery is then proposed featuring an intermediat...

IP-based transport of voice traffic in the UMTS radio access network: analytical study and empirical validation Transport basé sur IP du trafic voix dans le réseau d’accès radio UMTS: étude analytique et validation empirique

In this paper, we investigate the IP protocol as a transport option for the user traffic in the UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN), where stringent delay bounds are to be met for both real-time and non real-time traffic. We focus on real-time voice traffic and present an analytical model for the multiplexing and transport of voice channels in the UTRAN using IP. The novelty of our mo...
